6 ways to boost engagement on Instagram Live

Fancy trying your hand at Instagram Live? Make sure you don’t get lost in the noise by setting yourself up for success before you even start broadcasting with my six tips to get more engagement.

Why use Instagram Live?

When done correctly, going live on Instagram is an excellent way to create an event and build a connection with your customers. The barriers to entry are so low that even people with little video experience are giving it a shot.

Marketers and brand owners are taking full advantage of people’s interest in taking part in live events by giving customers free, valuable content that features products, takes people behind the scenes, invites them to an exclusive event or creates buzz around an announcement. Amongst other things, I've seen brands doing beauty tutorials, celebrity interviews, DIY facial tips, quizzes, free stand-up shows, and - probably the most popular - home workouts.

6 ways to get more engagement on your Instagram live streams

Want to try Instagram Live too? Here are 6 tips to boost engagement:

  1. Prep beforehand: even if you don't want to go as far as writing a full script, having a plan will avoid awkward silences and make sure you get all your points across.

  2. Tell your Instagram followers when you're going live and cross-promote on your other channels: promote your live stream ahead of time and use features like Instagram Stories countdown stickers to create buzz.

  3. Go live when your customers are online: use the Audience tab in Instagram Insights to find out when your followers are most active.

  4. Think about your location: unless you have a home studio, try to pick a spot that has good natural lighting and the background isn't distracting. Test it out by using your phone or laptop camera to take a couple of shots in situ ahead of time to make sure you're happy with the aesthetics.

  5. Interact with your viewers: connect with them by asking questions and responding to comments.

  6. Repurpose your video: save your video once you’ve finished so you can reuse it for future marketing content. You could add a replay to your Instagram Stories or chunk it into smaller clips to use on Reels and other social media sites like TikTok.
